Food trucks have been in an uphill battle with the restaurant community and city of Tacoma for years. It’s a beautiful thing to know that Tacoma’s Health Department is so in-the-know and actively checking their list so thoroughly to ensure all things are up to code. But I have seen it be incredibly frustrating to get great businesses started because it’s the red taped path that leads to a ribbon cutting ceremony. When Burger Seoul was getting started eyes seemed to be on them with a laser focus. Due to the city’s regulations they couldn’t cruise from place to place setting up shop where requested or commissioned by other businesses or organizations. A business model you usually see in other cities that helps build awareness and word of mouth marketing was not allowed here. Since then it seems the city has lightened up a bit but they’re still ready to crack down on inspections at a moment's notice. I’ve seen it happen even at the Tacoma Art Museum.

Burger Seoul is still a food truck today but it’s not mobile. It’s located firmly on 19th & Prospect in the corner of the 19th St Grocery and Deli parking lot. Owner Young was featured on the latest Best of South South Mag issue. His beloved burgers helped Burger Seoul win best food truck. Based off the consistency, quality and uniqueness of their menu it should have been in the feature for most consecutive wins, the food and experience have been high level since its order window opened in 2015. By 2016 it was one of few places on my monthly visits list. The highlights of the menu are the Seoul Burger and the Bulgogiger. Both of which you need to take deep breaths and water breaks to finish in one sitting. It’s a burger fiend’s dream and a pleasant surprise to a KBBQ enthusiast. A specialty not to be overlooked is their FIRE sauce - it’s only added to certain items but the Seoul FIRE fries is where it really shines. It’s like far less messy kimchi fries. Pay for double meat. The menu isn’t long because it doesn’t need to be, Young introduced something into the marketplace that wasn’t there and fulfilled a burger dream while we were sleep.

But like ALL great establishments it isn’t just about the consumption it’s about the experience as well. That’s where adding the right people to your business becomes important and Young has known that from the beginning. He’s an ambitious creative as much as he is an entrepreneur and brings his high energy to the business. You can find him dressing up for most of the holidays, singing karaoke from the food truck, inviting patrons to sing along, full dance breaks from time to time and on a rare occasion he’ll produce apparel for himself and the Seoul squad. Through careful hiring Young has found people who share his passion or have learned to participate from watching his performance. Burger Seoul vet, Jordan is a friendly familiar face to anyone who enjoys the food frequently. He’s there all the time and with a smile and energy that lets you know he enjoys being a part of the Burger Seoul family and potential empire.

Remember your order Seoul Burger + FIRE fries.

Umi's CornerTacoma: The Red Hot - Brats, Brews & Beyond

Red hot is such a regular on my radar that it almost was overlooked. Located on the corner of Junett and 6th Ave. I would say that it is in the heart of 6th Ave., District. I’m sure someone could argue otherwise. But its location feels central to all the action and over the years its neighboring businesses have changed in a way that feels even more conducive to their target audience. The Red Hot sits on the corner, kiddie corner from Subway, directly across from taco time, Mary Mart is to its right and a tattoo parlor to its left. But just up the street less than a 5 min walk you have E9 and Locust Cider. Both of those establishments work with The Red Hot and you can find their flavors on tap there fairly often. So it’s neighborhood friendly to say the least.

Umi’s Tacoma: Goated Coffee for Tacoma

Dancing GoatsDancing Goats is one of the newer cafes to open in Tacoma. Post COVID coffee is hitting downtown Tacoma in waves and it’s got a few more surprises but Dancing Goats finally making its way to Tacoma is huge. First opened in our state capital Olympia, WA in 1988 it’s very much a heritage brand to WA although in an effort to scale the business it was moved to Atlanta to grow the roasting side of the company early on in the 90’s. It’s actually pretty cool they are just entering the Tacoma area. There’s something to be said about waiting for the right time and focusing on what makes sense until an attractive opportunity presents itself. And the Brewery Blocks is that opportunity. Their location at the entrance and next to the neighborhood signage is definitely an advantage. But their own branding is eye-catching and brightly colored as well.

Umi's Corner Tacoma: Meet The Shakabrah & An In-Depth Chat with Dan

The Shakabrah is cool because it has been around forever (25 years or so) and gone through a few iterations of itself without losing the environment that has turned it into a staple over time, nothing cooler in Tacoma than being around for a reason. Its placement in the 6th Ave district is definitely a help but it’s the food, people, service and the experience that keep the word of mouth reviews rolling in. Since about 2015, Tacoma has been in a serious growing phase and it’s resulted in a lot of change in ownership and that’s continuing to happen. Some of them have been really bad and some of them have been for the better. Shakabrah’s changes have only been to its benefit. In 2017 it changed hands and the new owners couldn’t see a reason for change. The old adage “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.” rang true. And the changes they did make have only made it more dynamic, a remodeled kitchen, a liquor license and advancement of their espresso/coffee offering.

Umi’s Corner Tacoma: It’s Alive!!!!!

The brew boom of the PNW doesn’t seem like it’s going to slow down anytime soon. Washington and Oregon have many great breweries and micro-breweries, and while Tacoma has a few it’s the taprooms that really have it dialed in around here. You’ve got your speciality ones, your traditional settings and now we have our first futuristic experience. The Living Taproom was designed with several seating experiences in mind. Upon entering the space you’re in the living room, it’s standard, a couch facing two chairs, a table and rug in between and plants framing it all. Walk past the living room and the space opens up, there’s high tables for standing, tall chairs for bar seating, group size tables with chairs, couple sized tables with chairs, a swing set seating area that’s a main attraction and outdoor seating with furnaces and a fire pit. The owners did their job with the decor, the drinking and the pouring that’s all on the patron.
